The ongoing war in Ukraine has devastated millions of lives, a situation that hits close to home for many of us. Russia's unjustified and violent invasion of Ukraine is not only a direct attack on sovereignty but also a breach of global peace and security. Despite these egregious actions, Russia remains a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), an institution that grants its members unparalleled access to global markets and technologies.

Russia’s WTO membership gives it the leverage to access advanced technologies, facilitating its military and, indirectly, its terrorist activities. This situation is fundamentally incompatible with the principles of justice, peace, and cooperation that underpin the WTO. Every additional day that Russia enjoys this membership, it undermines the credibility of international trade agreements and aids a nation accountable for countless humanitarian abuses.

Excluding Russia from the WTO would be a significant step towards isolating it economically, thereby inhibiting its ability to finance further military aggression. According to reports from reputable sources like the World Bank, Russia’s economy is highly reliant on international trade, accounting for about 15% of its GDP. By severing this crucial avenue, we can curtail its war-chest and limit the devastation it is capable of inflicting.

Furthermore, such a move sends a strong message to the international community that aggressive violations of another nation's sovereignty will not be tolerated. It would incentivize better adherence to international norms by other nations contemplating similar aggressive actions, knowing the serious economic repercussions they face.

We acknowledge that excluding Russia from the WTO is a substantial diplomatic action that will require collective efforts and enduring commitment from the international community. However, the moral imperative of protecting innocent lives and upholding international law far outweighs any temporary economic disruption this might cause.
