Exclude convicted rapist Daniel Gravell from early- release schemes
The Issue
Rape is one of the most heinous crimes, leaving survivors with lingering psychological scars, overwhelming fear, and a shattered sense of safety. The trauma is not confined to the moment of the assault; it infiltrates every aspect of a survivor's life, impacting mental health, relationships, and the ability to envisage a future free from fear.
When a rapist is finally brought to justice and sentenced, victims are given a semblance of closure and security, believing that their assailant will serve their full sentence. However, discovering that these perpetrators are released early, often without notification, is a devastating blow. It plunges survivors back into a vortex of anguish and insecurity, undermining the judicial system they thought they could trust.
We call upon the UK Government to take decisive action to protect victims from this cycle of trauma. Current early-release schemes sometimes allow convicted rapists to re-enter society before serving their full sentences, often without robust risk assessments and adequate victim consultations. This oversight fails to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of victims, leaving them to grapple with renewed fears.
Our proposal is simple yet critical: Exclude all convicted rapists from early-release eligibility. Administrators of the justice system should incorporate a victim-centred approach in all release decisions, guaranteeing that their voice is heard and valued. This includes thorough risk assessments and mandatory victim consultation to ensure that their wellbeing is pivotal to any decision-making process.
Moreover, transparency with victims must be improved. They need to receive comprehensive and timely information regarding the terms of a rapist's sentence and any potential changes. This measure is not just about keeping survivors informed—it is about recognising and valuing their need for safety, peace of mind, and justice.
Sign this petition to urge the UK Government to stand with survivors, reinforcing their right to live without the shadow of their assailant's early release looming over them. Our legal system must unequivocally support those it seeks to protect, treating survivors with the dignity and respect they deserve. Demand accountability, demand transparency, and most importantly, demand safety for rape victims across the nation.
Daniel Gravell was sentenced to 9 years , however he is due to be released in 2030 …. This is not justice !
