EU Makes Clear Airlines Obligation to Cash Refund

The European Union authorities have explicitly stated that EU member states must ensure passengers receive a full cash refund from airlines operating under their jurisdiction. Despite this, most member states are not enforcing the rules, and are permitting long processing delays or payment in vouchers.

This petition achieved little momentum and has been hardly noticed. The EU law remains in favour of the consumer, but the airline industry feels little obligation to comply with it. Because of the general lack of interest, and the fact that the relevant European Union authorities have declared in favour of the consumer, I will be closing down the petition.

Thanks for your interest in acting on behalf of the consumer in Europe. It is a pity that member states are showing less interest in their citizens than the European Union.

Regards

Ricardo Maragna
