Portugal will try to organize the first intergovernmental conferences with Northern Macedonia and Albania in the first half of the year. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, Augusto Santos Silva, whose country took over the presidency of the EU on January 1, informs the Journal.

Silva in an online briefing with journalists, stressed that the opening of accession negotiations with Skopje and Tirana will be among the priorities of the Portuguese presidency.

He stressed that the EU has so far made many demands for northern Macedonia. RMV had to implement a large number of important reforms, and even change the name of the state.

“They do their job,” he said. “Now is the time for us to do our job,” said Silva.

He warned that the Portuguese leadership through talks with the two sides will try to overcome the misunderstandings between Sofia and Skopje.

“Now we have a new situation – the issues decided by Bulgaria. My aim is to talk intensively with the governments of RMV and Bulgaria. Because it is important to listen carefully to the arguments of both parties. “When this is done, it is easy to understand that there is a common basis on which to work”, concluded the head of Portuguese diplomacy.
