Decision Maker Response

Dear neighbors,
I completely understand your frustration and I share your concerns regarding the current situation with law enforcement in our community.
I am concerned that we are approaching a potentially dangerous combination of circumstances and as such, I have been in frequent contact with Sheriff Downey.
I must stress that the Sheriff is an independently elected official and the Board of Supervisors has no power to tell him how to run his office. Our only power is in the allotment of budget dollars and we have not made any cuts in the Sheriff's budget.
We are not in a position to increase his allotment and are currently looking into raising revenue through a tax (either sales or utility) that would be on the November Ballot. I am on the committee that is looking into putting that issue before the voters and will have more information about that effort in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, I am sharing your letter with the Sheriff and I will continue to work with him on possible interim solutions.
I agree with you that this issue needs to be a priority for all of us and I will do all in my power to help in any way. I will continue to work with all concerned in our community to help find a solution to this problem.
Yours, sincerely,
Estelle Fennell
