The Issue

My connection with St. George's Day cannot be overstated because it's a celebration of the patron saint who has immensely contributed to our country and culture. When St. George's Day comes, flags bearing his iconography are ubiquitously flown, marking a unique unity among us. This goes to show how deep the love and appreciation for our patron saint run, and yet, our prime way of rejoicing falls short. It is merely by hosting flags everywhere without an official day off to reflect on what the day and St. George carry for us. Let us honour our cultural history by converting St. George's Day into a fully-fledged bank holiday, thereby enabling a correct celebration as a nation.

In comparison, Ireland officially recognises St. Patrick's Day as a public holiday and has been commemorating it since the early 17th century. Remarkably, this celebration has even globalised, with various cities around the world holding St. Patrick's Day parades. Consequently, Ireland's culture and heritage have gained significant international visibility. We can create a similar impact for England by providing a national platform to honour St. George properly.

Calling on your public spiritedness, signing this petition is an earnest plea to the UK Government to mark St. George's Day as an official bank holiday. Stand with me in honouring St. George in the grandest way that speaks to our cultural depth. Please, make a difference by signing the petition today.
