As residents of Mississippi, we witness daily the struggles faced by our community. The widespread homelessness and the plight of working-class people trying to maintain a decent standard of living in our state is heartbreaking. Our Gen X, Millenials and Gen Z neighbors are shouldering the most burden. Starting adulthood through the journey of renting apartments and homes has become a stressful experience due to the looming concern of potential rent increases. With inflation on the rise and an untouched minimum wage, the threat to housing security is becoming ever more imminent.

According to recent studies, Mississippi has one of the lowest costs of living in the nation. However, this doesn't mitigate the housing insecurity felt by those earning low wages. Premature and unreasonable rent increases should not contribute to the already existing housing insecurity. Adequate state-wide rent control laws will serve to ease this stress and offer a more predictable and stable future for the people of Mississippi.

Our goal is two-fold. Firstly, we want to raise awareness about this pressing issue. Secondly, we demand the introduction of comprehensive rent control laws in Mississippi. We believe that by emphasizing steadfast rent control, we can significantly lower housing insecurity among multiple generations and create a more stable economic future in our beloved state.

Housing is a fundamental human right. By shaping policies that protect tenants from excessive rent hikes, we can contribute to addressing the state's housing crisis and reduce the risk of homelessness.
