Establish Prayer Time for All Students and Staff Prior to Class Who Desires To Pray

The Issue

This issue we are addressing is deeply personal. The loss of students to bullying, suicide, and gun violence on our campuses underscores a desperate need for significant change within our educational system. This petition requests the establishment of opportunities for all students and staff to engage in prayer or quiet reflection before any class begins on campus.

Research underscores the value of quiet, reflective exercise; a study by the American Psychological Association found that regular mindfulness, a practice somewhat akin to prayer, can improve mental health and well-being (American Psychological Association, 2012). Therefore, offering moments for prayer or reflection may be an invaluable resource in helping our students cope with the difficulties they encounter daily.

While it is our goal to create space for all forms of religious and non-religious expression, we understand that this initiative may face some pushback given the diverse nature of our society. Yet, in America, religious freedom is a basic human right, and we strongly believe that this should resonate within our educational institutions as well.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for the right of students and staff to embrace their spiritual or non-spiritual practice - both as a means to self-expression and a way to enhance emotional resilience. Please sign this petition to support the growth of our students and staff in their diverse journeys. Help strengthen the emotional and mental fortitude within our schools.
