The Issue

I've seen firsthand the insidious effects of narcissistic abuse. For the last seven years, even though my mother severed ties over a year and half ago, we have remained the targets of this brutal form of manipulation. This predator continues to tread on our lives, causing emotional, psychological, physical, and financial pain without any legal repercussions.

Despite the recent Domestic Abuse Act presenting a legislative recognition of psychological and emotional abuse, there is a dire need for narcissistic abuse to be specified and classified as a distinct criminal offence. This type of abuse is characterized by a complete lack of empathy and conscience, the abusers typically deriving pleasure from tormenting their victims.

Perpetrators of narcissistic abuse not only harm their direct victims, but also indirectly influence and traumatize their families. The impacts are immense and ruthless yet due to a lack of classification under law, it remains challenging to bring action against these abusers.

This form of abuse is not rare. Various studies suggest that up to 6.2% of the population exhibit narcissistic traits, which underscores the potential magnitude of this issue. It is high time we fortify our legal system to tackle this pervasive abuse. By designating narcissistic abuse as a specific criminal offence, we can empower victims, strengthen legal action against perpetrators, and recognize the profound harm done by these individuals.

I believe if there was a specific law around narcissistic abuse it would stop people from getting caught up in more severe cases of Domestic Violence as action would be taken sooner and people would be more inclined to get help. Help that is not available right now, hence the amount of people stuck in these situations who have no way out.

For the sake of my mother, myself, and countless others who daily endure attacks without any form of justice: let's raise our voices for change. Please sign and share this petition, urging lawmakers to define and criminalise narcissistic  abuse.
