My autistic 14-year-old son has been called a retard, ignored, whispered about, and stared at while attending normal public swimming sessions. It's heartbreaking to witness the lack of understanding and kindness that he and other children with additional needs experience. My son isn't the only one affected; there are countless other children and adults who cannot comfortably attend standard swimming sessions due to similar reasons and social stigma.

Plymouth has two beautiful lidos, Mount Wise and Tinside, which could easily host dedicated sessions specifically for individuals with additional needs. Such sessions would provide a supportive environment where those with autism, sensory issues, and other challenges could enjoy swimming without fear of judgment or unkind remarks.

Creating these inclusive sessions would offer much-needed respite to families, allowing them to enjoy time together, especially during the summer months. It would also foster a sense of community, helping parents and individuals build supportive networks and form new friendships.

We propose scheduling these sessions at regular intervals, ensuring that these individuals have ample opportunities to participate. Additionally, training staff to be more inclusive and sensitive to the needs of all attendees would contribute significantly to creating a welcoming environment.
