Establish Equal Playoff Opportunities for Section VI Girls Varsity Basketball

The Issue

As girls basketball players in Western New York, we have experienced firsthand the unequal treatment that goes against the spirit of Title IX. Our Section VI Girls Varsity Basketball programs are relegated to playing semi-final rounds of playoffs at local high schools while our male counterparts enjoy the privilege of competing at Buffalo State College. This disparity not only undermines our efforts but also sends a disheartening message about gender equality in sports.

Title IX was enacted to prevent gender discrimination in any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. It states that "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." Yet here we are decades later still fighting for equal opportunities.

This is not just about a venue; it's about respect and recognition. Playing at Buffalo State College offers an elevated experience and exposure that can open doors for future opportunities such as scholarships and college recruitment.

We urge Section VI officials and those responsible for scheduling playoff games to rectify this inequality immediately by providing equal opportunity for both boys' and girls' varsity basketball teams to compete at Buffalo State College during semi-final rounds.

Let's level up the playing field because we deserve nothing less than equality. Sign this petition today if you believe in fair play and support our call for change!
