The Issue

Having spent nearly my entire life in Walled Lake, Commerce, and Wixom over the past 30 years, I have witnessed firsthand the transformation of our beloved local landscape. Over these many years, vast acres of woods, fields, and natural features have vanished, making way for expensive housing developments, towering apartment complexes, and barren parking lots. Though I personally hold no position of authority, it seems evident that the surrounding townships and cities have been heavily leaning towards commercialization and relentless residential development.

Walled Lake, MI, is a community rich in history and natural beauty. However, like many who've watched this community grow, I harbor a deep concern that unchecked development is erasing what makes our area special. Protecting the land in our community from these ridiculous developments is crucial. Claiming somewhere for a green space is also crucial. Not only would this venture preserve the land from becoming yet another pretentious building development, but it would also provide a green space for our community to thrive in.

Imagine a space where neighbors, friends, and families can come together: learning, growing, and creating memories. A community garden stands as a beacon of education and fellowship, offering beauty and fresh produce for all ages, while also fostering a deeper connection with nature.

Community gardens and parks also come with myriad benefits. According to the American Community Gardening Association, these gardens have been shown to improve participants' life satisfaction, encourage sustainable practices, and foster stronger community ties. Beyond the personal and communal advantages, they can play a part in addressing larger environmental and educational challenges, acting as living classrooms for schools and community groups.

This is a call to our local authorities, friends, and supporters: let's join forces to make this vision a reality. With the establishment of a community garden or park, we can show that we need to protect our cherished green spaces, nurture relationships, and cultivate a more beautiful environment for future generations.

Sign this petition to support the creation of a community garden in Walled Lake and help preserve the identity of Walled Lake, MI, while combatting the relentless wave of commercial and residential development. Together, we can sow the seeds for a brighter, greener future.
