Establish Bereavement Units in Public Hospitals for neonatal loss#NeonatalLoss #forsonny
The Issue
This petition is deeply personal to me. I've witnessed the devastating impact of neonatal loss on a mother's mental wellbeing firsthand. My niece, after losing one baby and having another in an incubator on special care, was wheeled into a maternity ward with her baby Sonny that had passed. Watching my niece and her family have to go through this has been soul destroying The emotional toll this took on her and our entire family was immeasurable. It's soul-destroying enough to experience such loss, but the lack of appropriate facilities only compounds the grief.#forsonny
We are urging our government to consider creating bereavement units or rooms for pregnancy loss in major public hospitals across our state. These units should be separate from but close to maternity wards, providing a safe space for those experiencing miscarriage, stillbirth and early neonatal death.
Just three or five rooms could make a world of difference - somewhere that feels safe and has trained psychologists and counsellors who can help mothers, partners, and families navigate their , approximately 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage; about 24,000 babies are stillborn each year; and there are about 19,000 neonatal deaths annually (APA). These statistics highlight the urgent need for specialized bereavement units within our hospitals.
It's time we provide adequate support during these heartbreaking times - not just medically but emotionally as well. Sign this petition today if you believe that every parent who experiences pregnancy loss deserves access to dedicated bereavement care within their local hospital.
