I am writing this petition to urge you to establish an Ethics Commission for the Santa Clara City Council. As a concerned resident of Santa Clara, California, I have witnessed several instances of unethical behavior by council members that have deeply impacted our community.

Firstly, it has come to light that several council members have engaged in numerous secret meetings with the 49ers organization. These undisclosed meetings raise serious concerns about transparency and potential conflicts of interest. The residents of Santa Clara deserve elected officials who prioritize the best interests of our community above all else.

Furthermore, Vice Mayor Kevin Park's actions have been highly questionable. He has not only defamed the Chief of Police and his wife but also used books as a means to bully residents. Such behavior is unacceptable from someone in a position of power and influence within our city.

Additionally, Council Member Anthony Becker's indictment for perjury raises significant doubts about his ability to serve effectively on the council. We need representatives who uphold the highest standards of integrity and honesty.

Moreover, it is disheartening to learn that Parks and Recreation Commissioner Burt Field was denied reappointment without any apparent valid reason. This decision undermines public trust in your selection process and raises questions about potential biases within your administration.

In light of these concerning incidents, I wholeheartedly support Mayor Gillmor's call for an Ethics Commission in Santa Clara. An independent commission would ensure accountability among council members and provide a platform for addressing ethical violations promptly and fairly.

Establishing an Ethics Commission will not only restore faith in our local government but also promote transparency, integrity, and fairness within our community. It will empower residents like me to hold elected officials accountable for their actions while fostering trust between citizens and their representatives.

As someone who has supported the creation of an Ethics Commission since 1995, this issue holds personal significance to me. I believe that Santa Clara deserves a council that operates with the utmost ethical standards and serves the best interests of its residents.
