The Issue

Actuarial Science is a rapidly growing field that combines mathematics, statistics, and financial theory to study uncertain future events. The Bureau of Labor Statistics in the USA states that the employment of Actuaries is projected to grow 22% from 2024-2034, demonstrating the high demand for these skilled professionals in the coming years. Additionally, the U.S. News and World Report ranks Actuary as the #7 Best STEM Job, and #11 in the 100 Best Jobs, proving that it is a popular career choice.

However, despite the fact that OSU is the largest university in Oregon, and is known for its dedication to the STEM fields, it does not offer a thorough program for Actuarial Science. Further, OSU already offers all of the courses required to have a full program, and still is not offering one, despite demand. The College of Science has an Actuarial Science undergraduate minor, but not a full program. Additionally, this minor does not include coverage of the Validation by Educational Experience courses that are required during undergraduate studies to become an accredited actuary.

We want to get OSU to have a thorough, accessible, and interesting Actuarial Science program, and the first step is establishing an undergraduate major specifically for Actuarial Science. We want this program to be recognized by the Society of Actuaries at the UCAP-AC level, and by the Casualty Actuarial Society at the Bronze level.
