Establish a Winter-Use Non-Contact Sports Area in Woolwich-Green Zone
Establish a Winter-Use Non-Contact Sports Area in Woolwich-Green Zone
The Issue

Reclaiming the Night: The Woolwich "Green Zone"
A Vision for Connection, Movement, and Heritage.
I’m John Gavin. As a long-time resident, I’ve seen firsthand how non-contact sports can knit a community together. However, since the pandemic, a shadow of isolation has lingered over Woolwich. Between the dark winter months and the unfair stigma surrounding our nighttime streets, getting people outdoors hasn't just been a fitness challenge—it’s been a safety hurdle.
We deserve better. We need a space that is accessible, inclusive, and vibrant—a place where every resident feels safe to connect(outdoors).
The Vision: A Winter Hub Like No Other
The Green Zone isn’t just a sporting and activity area; it’s a community landmark. We are proposing an optimally lit, tree-lined sanctuary designed to counter negative perceptions of our area through beauty and activity.
This hub will be the premier home for the non-contact modern athlete:
Court & Field Sports: Tennis, Padel, Pickleball, Volleyball, and Netball.
Team Dynamics: Ultimate Frisbee, Adult Tag, U7s Tag, Touch and mixed-gender games that rebuild our social fabric.
The Running Revolution: By popular demand, we’ve integrated a dedicated running track. Following the success of the Royal Arsenal Fun Run and the local surge in Park Run participation, this track will offer a safe, high-quality circuit for runners of all levels.
A Celebration of Woolwich Heritage
In a unique cultural twist, we are proposing to integrate the presence of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery. These majestic horses are a "hidden" piece of our local heritage. By bringing this asset into our environment—allowing the public to witness the mastery of their training—we can transform the Green Zone into a world-class tourism destination and a point of local pride.
Why Now?
The data is clear: participation in non-contact sports has surged by 35% over the last five years (Sport England). This isn't a "nice-to-have" project; it is an urgent investment in our mental health and community safety.
Our Ask: We need the local council to grant planning permission for accessible land. This approval is the "master key" that unlocks social good and erases the stigma holding Woolwich back.
Join the Movement
Don’t let another winter pass in isolation. Help us transform Woolwich into a vibrant, inclusive playground for everyone.
