Establish a Sustainable Light Rail Network in Lansing/East Lansing
The Issue
As an advocate for sustainable transit solutions, I am deeply concerned about the traffic congestion in Lansing and East Lansing. Despite not being a resident of these cities, this issue affects me profoundly. I firmly believe that implementing a light rail network could be the solution to this problem.
The benefits of light rail networks are numerous. They provide an efficient, reliable mode of transport that can significantly reduce traffic congestion on both freeways and city streets. According to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), communities with public transportation save 865 million hours in travel time annually.
Moreover, light rail networks have proven beneficial for other cities similar to Lansing/East Lansing. For instance, Portland's MAX Light Rail system has been successful in reducing car usage and promoting sustainable commuting habits among residents.
And all forms of public transportation have proven to be significant sources of economic revenue generation. For every $1 invested in public transportation, $5 of economic revenue is generated. So if the city of East Lansing were to invest $1.2 million dollars in light rail, $6 million worth of economic revenue would be generated. No, I am not bluffing nor exaggerating. It's basic math.
Lansing and East Lansing deserve the same opportunity for improved transit options. A light rail network would not only ease traffic but also contribute towards environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions from cars.
Therefore, we urge local authorities to seriously consider establishing a light rail network in these cities as part of their commitment towards creating more sustainable urban environments. Please sign this petition if you agree that it's time for change!
