Establish a special needs school in Lochaber

Establish a special needs school in Lochaber
The Issue
My daughter is 10 years old, autistic, and has not attended school since November 2024. Despite our repeated requests, Highland Council insists that she can manage in mainstream schooling, but this is not the case. The council redirects us to a special needs school in Inverness, yet it is already at full capacity and only offers day schooling, which does not accommodate families like ours who live further away. Expecting every family with special needs children to relocate to Inverness is not realistic nor fair.
We need a dedicated special needs school in Lochaber to ensure all children, like my daughter, receive the education and support they deserve. Highland Council's refusal to consider placing special needs pupils in schools outside their region is limiting their opportunities and growth.
In Lochaber, many families with special needs children face similar challenges. A local school would provide an inclusive environment where children can flourish with the tailored support necessary for their development. Establishing this school would not only benefit current families but also attract others to the area, boosting community spirit and inclusivity.
According to the National Autistic Society, around 1% of the UK population is on the autism spectrum, which emphasizes the significant demand for appropriate educational facilities. Yet, Highland Council's current provision falls short of meeting these needs.
By establishing a special needs school in Lochaber, we can ensure that every child has access to a suitable educational environment, close to their homes, without having to undergo long commutes or stressful relocations. Education is a fundamental right everyone deserves, and it's time Highland Council acknowledges the distinctive educational requirements of children with special needs in our region.
Sign this petition to show Highland Council that Lochaber is ready and waiting for its own special needs school. Your support could change the future for countless children and their families.
