The Issue

As residents of Hartsville, SC we understand the importance of having a dedicated safe space for our community to practice and enjoy recreational activities.

Skate parks provide a safe environment for kids and adults alike to be physically active, build confidence, and get outdoors. Sidewalks and roadways are not built for the purpose of these activities and create unnecessary dangers for skaters, inline skaters, etc.

In the United States alone there are more than 3,500 skate parks (source: Tony Hawk Foundation). Yet in Hartsville we lack such facilities. This not only limits our ability to engage in this popular sport but also deprives us of its numerous benefits. It also exposes children & adults to unnecessary dangers due to skating on sidewalks and city streets.

Skateboarding, and other such activities, have been proven to improve physical health as well as mental well-being (source: American Journal of Public Health). It encourages social interaction among diverse groups and fosters community spirit. By establishing a skate park here in Hartsville we can provide these benefits to our residents while promoting active lifestyles.

It's time we bring these advantages home. Let's establish a public, city-run, skate park that is free to use for ALL in Hartsville! Sign this petition if you agree that it's high time we had our own local facility where skaters of all kinds can safely practice their passion.

Skate Park Benefits

Skate parks offer numerous benefits to individuals and communities:

Physical Exercise: Skateboarding is a physically demanding activity that engages various muscle groups, improves balance, coordination, and cardiovascular health.

Social Interaction: Skate parks provide a space for skaters to connect, share tips, and build friendships. They foster a sense of community among skaters of all ages and backgrounds.

Creativity and Expression: Skate parks offer an outlet for creativity and self-expression through tricks, style, and personal flair. Skaters can explore their own unique approaches to the sport.

Skill Development: Skating in a park allows individuals to continuously challenge themselves and improve their skills. From mastering basic maneuvers to learning advanced tricks, there's always something new to try.

Safety: Skate parks provide a designated area for skating, reducing the likelihood of accidents or conflicts with pedestrians, cyclists, or motorists on the streets and sidewalks.

Economic Impact: Well-designed skate parks can attract visitors from surrounding areas, benefiting local businesses such as shops, restaurants, and hotels.

Youth Engagement: Skate parks offer a positive recreational outlet for youth, keeping them active and engaged in a constructive activity, potentially steering them away from less desirable behaviors.

Community Development: Building and maintaining a skate park can foster a sense of pride and ownership among community members. It provides a space where people can come together and enjoy a shared interest.

Inclusivity: Skate parks welcome skaters of all skill levels, genders, ages, and backgrounds. They provide a space for people to participate in a non-traditional sport without fear of discrimination.

Creative Use of Space: Skate parks can transform underutilized or abandoned areas into vibrant community spaces, contributing to the revitalization of neighborhoods.

Overall, skate parks offer a range of physical, social, and economic benefits, making them valuable assets to communities.
