Establish a Department of Peace & Foundational Security in Canada

Establish a Department of Peace & Foundational Security in Canada
The Issue
We, the undersigned, believe that Canada must take bold, restorative action to redefine what national security truly means — by investing in peace, reconciliation, and regeneration.
True peace is not just the absence of conflict. It is clean water, safe housing, healing from trauma, food security, Indigenous leadership, and climate-resilient communities.
We call upon the Government of Canada to establish a Department of Peace & Foundational Security to complement the Department of National Defence.
This department would focus on:
Funding community-based peacebuilding initiatives, including Indigenous-led healing and water protection projects.
Supporting frontline caregivers, community health and resilience efforts, and restorative justice.
Embedding Truth and Reconciliation principles, including the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
Collaborating with youth, Elders, academics, and spiritual leaders to develop long-term peace infrastructure.
At a time when military budgets are soaring and social services are strained, we ask:
What if we matched our defense spending with investments in peace and foundational security for all?
Let’s unite to call for this transformational shift — to help build a Canada where regenerative peace is as funded and prioritized as much as military defense.
