The Issue

Sonya Massey, a beloved community member, was fatally shot by a police officer who had previously been employed by six different departments over a mere four-year span. This officer had multiple DUIs on his record, revealing a grave systemic failure in our law enforcement hiring practices.

Regrettably, Sonya's story is not unique. Instances of misconduct resulting in the re-employment of unfit officers have been observed across the nation.

The necessary steps to rectify this issue have become abundantly clear: We propose the creation of a comprehensive national registry for police officer terminations. This would include pertinent information like the officer's name and rank, department name and location, and explicit reasons for termination. In addition, any public or private department write-ups, reviews, and complaints should be made readily available.

Fundamentally, publicly accessible information about an officer should remain public, while confidential records should be accessible to every corresponding police department. When a terminated officer is hired by a new department, this should be accompanied by a cogent justification.

The proposed national registry would provide transparency, protect our communities, and promote accountability. Let the tragic loss of Sonya Massey be a catalyst for meaningful change. Stand with us to demand a fairer and safer system. Please, sign this petition today.
