Stanlow, Cheshire: We Demand the Council Monitors Industrial Air Pollution
The Issue
Stanlow is one of the most heavily industrialised areas in the region - yet residents have very little information about the amount of industrial pollution in the air we breathe.
The Council says it has a “high degree of confidence” that industrial emissions are not harmful to residents.
But their assurance relies on historic monitoring of benzene which stopped in 2012, historic monitoring of 1,3-butadiene which stopped in 2002, reported reductions in emissions, permit regulation and other regulatory assessments - rather than current comprehensive monitoring of whats in the air we breathe.
We don't think that's good enough.
What are we asking for?
We want an adequate industrial air-quality monitoring network across the communities surrounding Stanlow, measuring the pollutants most relevant to local heavy industry:
Benzene • 1,3-butadiene • Toluene • Xylenes • PM2.5 • PM10 • SO₂ • NO₂
Monitoring should be continuous where appropriate, positioned to capture pollution from different industrial sources and dispersal plumes, with the results transparent and publicly available.
If the Council wants to assure residents our air is safe, it should have the current evidence to show it.
Sign the petition: monitor our air and publish the data.
