The final clemency petition was officially submitted to the Indiana Parole Board this week! This is a major milestone in Kofi’s journey toward justice, and we are deeply grateful for everyone who has stood with him and our family.
From here, we will wait for the Parole Board to review the full packet and forward their confidential recommendation to Governor Braun. We do not know the timeline for this step, and we will not be told what their recommendation is once it is made.
After receiving the Board’s recommendation, Governor Braun — who holds sole decision-making authority — may accept it, reject it, or choose not to issue a decision. There is no required timeframe for the Governor to respond.
Our request to the Governor is clear: grant Kofi clemency and commute his sentence to time served, which would allow for his immediate release after 31 years in prison. We remain hopeful for a prompt and positive decision.
A Thanksgiving Moment
More than 40 of us gathered for Thanksgiving this year, and right on schedule, my brother called. Over the 20 minutes we had, we passed the phone around to almost everyone so they could say hello. I worried afterward that hearing all the voices and not being physically with us might leave him feeling sad.
But shortly after we hung up, he sent a text about our once-baby-now-grown cousin Jade. Even after 31 years inside, Kofi still shows up for his family with a heart wide open. It was a powerful reminder of who he is, what he has overcome, and how ready he is to come home.
