Equalize the Costs of Gluten-free and Regular Food Products
Equalize the Costs of Gluten-free and Regular Food Products
The issue
As a person diagnosed with Coeliac Disease and IBS, the incredible cost difference between gluten-free (GF) and regular products isn't just a financial obstacle - it's a question of health. It is heart-wrenching and frustrating to see GF product prices almost triple that of their regular counterparts. It feels like we are paying an unfair "no gluten" tax, when all we are trying to do is protect ourselves, our small intestines and abide by our health condition. Look at the cost of regular tip top white bread ($4,50) and GF tip top white bread ($7) and tell me that’s okay.
Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune disorder that affects approximately 1 in 70 Australians — equating to around 360,000 to 400,000 people nationwide. Despite its prevalence, about 80% of those affected remain undiagnosed, meaning the majority are unaware they have the condition. Given the high rate of undiagnosed cases, increased awareness and proactive screening are essential. Early diagnosis and adherence to a gluten-free diet can significantly improve quality of life and reduce the risk of serious health issues hence why lowering the cost or providing a subsidy would help those diagnosed with Coeliac Disease.
For many of us living with this condition, it can prove to be a financial burden due to the pricing disparity among gluten-free and regular food products.
I believe it is time to address this pricing imbalance and urge manufacturers and retailers of gluten-free products to rethink their pricing strategies. I will be advocating for same price for gluten-free products as regular ones. We shouldn't have to pay more due to an autoimmune disease.
I call on lawmakers and food regulatory agencies to implement fair policies that will give us equal footing with others when it comes to food prices. When the petition reaches enough signatures, I will be contacting big corporations to figure out if there’s anything that can be done about the pricing of GF food.
Please sign this petition to aid in making a much needed change for millions of Coeliac Disease sufferers. We shouldn't have to break the bank just to sustain our health.
