Open civil partnerships to all

0 have signed. Let’s get to 200,000!

We’re Rebecca and Charles, and we want to celebrate our relationship and provide protection for our family by having a civil partnership. However, until recently, we could not do so because the Civil Partnership Act 2004 states: ‘Two people are not eligible to register as civil partners of each other if … they are not of the same sex.’

With your support, we mounted a successful legal challenge. In June 2018, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the current situation is discriminatory, cannot be justified, and is therefore unlawful.

Soon after, in October 2018, Prime Minister Theresa May publicly announced her Government's commitment to extend civil partnerships to all.

In March 2019, Tim Loughton MP’s private members’ bill received royal assent and became the Civil Partnerships, Marriages and Deaths (Registration etc) Act.

By law, civil partnerships must be made available to opposite-sex couples by 31st December 2019.

But there’s still a bit more work to do. Secondary legislation will be introduced to finalise the specific arrangements, and a consultation will be launched in summer 2019. So, to get over this final hurdle, we ask you to please do the following:

1. Make your views heard when the consultation is announced in 2019. We will be back in touch with the details. Our view is that:

  • Civil partnerships should be affordable and accessible to all, at a low standard price across the country
  • Those in marriages should be able to easily convert these into civil partnerships, if they wish
  • There should be no time limit or “window” of conversion - the option should be permanently open to those who are married but would prefer to become civil partners

2. Please sign and share this petition:

3. Please donate to the Equal Civil Partnerships campaign:

4. Please sign up to the campaign's mailing list to ensure you’re first to hear the latest news in what promises be a big year for civil partnerships

We'll keep you updated with our progress.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for all your support. We literally could not have gotten this far without you.

Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidan
