Petition Update: 145 Signatures and Growing
Thank you to everyone who has signed, shared, commented, and helped move this petition forward. We have now reached 145 verified signatures and are working toward the next goal of 200.
Every signature matters, because this issue is bigger than one family, one town, or one island.
Fixing TRICARE access in Puerto Rico is first and foremost about healthcare. Military retirees and their families earned these benefits through service, sacrifice, deployments, family separations, and years of commitment. That promise should work in real life, not only on paper.
But this issue is also an opportunity for Puerto Rico.
If TRICARE worked better on the island, it could open the door for more Puerto Rican veterans, military retirees, and families currently living in the mainland to come back home. It could also make Puerto Rico a real retirement option for veterans from the states who would consider relocating here, but cannot take that risk if their spouses and dependents do not have reliable healthcare access.
Many retirees bring stable income with them: military retirement pay, VA disability compensation, Social Security, SSDI, federal pensions, and other benefits. That money supports local grocery stores, pharmacies, clinics, restaurants, schools, housing, small businesses, and communities.
Right now, much of that retirement income ends up staying in retirement hubs like Florida because Puerto Rico is not always seen as a safe or practical option for military families who depend on TRICARE.
That should matter to Puerto Rico.
This is not just about asking for equal healthcare access. It is also about allowing Puerto Rico to welcome back those who served, retain families who want to stay, and attract retirees who can contribute to the local economy.
The veteran may receive care through the VA, but many spouses, children, and dependents rely on TRICARE. When TRICARE access fails in Puerto Rico, families are forced to make painful decisions: stay and struggle, pay for private coverage, or leave the island again.
We sacrificed the same.
We paid into the same system.
Our families deserve access that works.
