Equal Prize Money for Non-Binary Athletes at the Montreal Marathon
The Issue
We, the undersigned, call on the organizers of the Montreal Marathon to immediately provide equitable prize money to winners in the non-binary category.
In the 2025 edition of the Marathon, prize money was awarded to winners in the men’s and women’s elite divisions ($5,000 each), but no prize money was given to the winner of the non-binary category. This exclusion is unjust and discriminatory.
The Canadian Human Rights Act (Bill C-16) prohibits discrimination based on gender identity or expression.
Section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees equality under the law without discrimination.
The Government of Canada’s Sport Equity Policy commits to equitable treatment across all genders in sport by 2035.
Non-binary athletes invest the same dedication, training, and sacrifice as their peers. To deny them equal recognition is to undermine Canada’s values of fairness, inclusivity, and respect.
We demand:
Immediate compensation for the non-binary category winners in the 2025 Marathon, proportionate to the prize money awarded to men’s and women’s winners.
A formal commitment from the Montreal Marathon to provide equal prize money for all categories (men, women, non-binary) in future events.
By signing this petition, we urge the Montreal Marathon to correct this inequity and show leadership in inclusivity and fairness.
Canada supports HUMAN RIGHTS for our non-binary siblings. Don't let the Montreal Marathon undermine the values of Canada's liberal and enlightened people.
Please sign and share widely to ensure all athletes are treated with equal dignity and respect.
