As a student at Sacramento State University, I'm disheartened by the decision to hold our Winter Commencement in the university gymnasium, a place which has yet to see any significant renovations. This decision becomes especially tough considering I never got to experience a high school graduation due to the pandemic. To further add salt to the wound, previous graduates have had the opportunity to commemorate this amazing achievement in their lives at the stunning Golden 1 Center, where I have even volunteered at two graduation ceremonies in the past.

The disparity in experience between past graduates and the graduating class of Fall 2024 is huge. Our college years have been filled with unprecedented challenges and making do with what options are left during the pandemic. Now, in the face of graduating in a less than satisfactory location, the tale of compromise feels all too familiar. For a university located in Sacramento, a city thriving with multiple venues suitable for such a momentous occasion, the current selection feels lacking.

We propose two options to enhance our graduation ceremonies. First, we suggest that Fall graduates who wish to celebrate their achievements at the Golden 1 Center be given the opportunity to attend the Spring Commencement. This would allow them to partake in a grand and memorable ceremony.

Alternatively, we recommend reconsidering the current venue arrangements to ensure that both Winter and Spring Commencements are equally outstanding. Specifically, we propose holding the Winter Commencement at the Golden 1 Center. After researching availability, we found that the center is open on the scheduled Winter Commencement dates of December 14th and 15th this year.

By implementing either of these options, we can ensure that all graduates experience a fitting and exceptional celebration of their accomplishments. Let us graduate dignifyingly, where our achievements can be celebrated in a suitable venue, surrounded by our peers and loved ones.
