Malakai’s Law - Ensure widespread access to EpiPens during emergencies
The Issue
My 14-year-old son, an active and kind-hearted boy who was always aware of food labels, tragically experienced a severe allergic reaction after a hockey game. He mistakenly thought a snack was safe but was unaware that it was cashew-based. Despite having been educated in reading labels and being cautious with food, he made a fatal mistake. He was my only child, and his sudden loss has deeply impacted our lives.
This heartbreaking incident is not isolated. Many families have faced similar situations where they couldn’t locate an EpiPen in time, and the rush to the nearest hospital can be the difference between life and death. The accessibility of life-saving medication like EpiPens is crucial, especially for individuals with severe allergies who may sometimes forget their personal EpiPen at home, in another car, or bag.
We call on policymakers to make EpiPens as accessible as Narcan in our communities. This means ensuring that all food establishments, schools, first aid kits, and firefighters carry EpiPens, so anyone experiencing a severe allergic reaction can receive quick and potentially life-saving intervention.
Currently, Narcan is readily available to address opioid overdoses, demonstrating that widespread accessibility of emergency medication is possible and effective. EpiPens, which can prevent anaphylactic shock and save lives, should be no different. The time taken to reach a hospital or retrieve a misplaced EpiPen could be critical in preventing fatalities.
By implementing these measures, we can prevent unnecessary tragedies and ensure that individuals with allergies are safer as they navigate public spaces. It is time we recognize severe allergies as a serious health concern and take action to support those affected.
Please sign this petition to advocate for the widespread availability of EpiPens, ensuring immediate access to life-saving medication for everyone in our communities.
