Senator Mike Duffy is returning to the Senate today after being acquitted of all charges in his fraud and bribery trial. Based on the judge's ruling, Democracy Watch is still calling on prosecutors to prosecute Nigel Wright and other officials in Prime Minister Harper's office (the Harper PMO) for the $90,000 payment to Senator Duffy. If government lawyers won't prosecute, Democracy Watch will. Please help prosecute the Harper PMO at: http://goo.gl/meaoLk and at: http://goo.gl/PvAmO4 you can see a CBC TV interview about this. More details below. As you may have seen in the news, the trial judge found some of Duffy's actions very questionable but ruled that criminal wrongdoing had not been proven. The judge also ruled that Senator Duffy had been threatened and essentially forced to take the $90,000 from Nigel Wright. Democracy Watch's position is that some of Duffy's actions did cross the line, and that prosecutors should appeal the judge's ruling. The appeal will have to be filed in the next couple of weeks so we'll see what happens. Importantly, in his ruling the judge called the payment of the $90,000, and the other actions of Nigel Wright and other officials' in Prime Minister Harper's office (the PMO), covert, driven by deceit and unacceptable in a democracy.
