Hello, Hope all is well. Given your interest in government accountability I thought you would be interested in Democracy Watch's new campaign to help ensure fair post-election actions by the Governor General and all federal political party leaders. The federal election is close – really close. Dangerously close. Why? Because Canada has no clear rules about what happens if the vote splits and no party ends up with a majority of MPs in the Parliament. If a vote split happens the Governor General (David Johnston -- who was chosen by Prime Minister Harper and has protected Harper and the Conservatives in the past) will choose which party gets to be the government. Governor General Johnston, unelected and unaccountable, also decides when Parliament will open, whether MPs support the government, whether the Prime Minister can shut down Parliament, and whether and when another election will happen. In England, Australia and New Zealand, political party leaders and MPs agreed years ago to fair rules so what happens after an election is clear and fair for all the parties, and for voters. Most countries in the world also have clear post-election rules. Go to the Stop Unfair Post-Election campaign at -- http://democracywatch.ca/campaigns/stopunfairpostelections/ -- to send your letter now calling on the Governor General and federal party leaders to publicly agree to fair post-election rules! Our democracy can’t afford any more shenanigans like what happened after the 2008 federal election. All together we can make difference! Thank you very much for your support, Duff, Tyler, Josephine and Brad and all the volunteers and donors across Canada who make Democracy Watch’s successful campaigns possible (thank you one and all!)
