According to annual Fitness to Practice reports funds spent run into the millions. In 2017-18 out of an annual income of £87.9 million the NMC spent £66.2million on Fitness to Practice.
This money is from registrants fees!
In 2017 - the NMC spent £240,000 getting an external legal firm to redact documents that father James Titcombe requested under FOI when investigating his son Joshua's death and the NMC's part in the process. This is the equivalent of 2,000 registrants annual fees (£120 / year)
Since 2008 the NMC has sanctioned nearly 10,000 registrants - 3,462 have been struck off the register according to the annual reports but these figures do not include those who have been removed from the register followed review of suspension orders or conditions of practice.
Dr Sarah Woolaston, MP, was able to gain information not in the public domain. She established that the source of referrals resulting in impairment or strike off or other action were only between 3% and 4% from members of the public with the remaining coming from employers. The figures showed that referrals from non employers are not taken seriously.
