Ensure Sufficient Lighting and Speed Enforcement on Route 97

The Issue

My brother Michael Fultz jr, tragically lost his life in a car accident on Route 97, a harrowing event that many others in Sykesville, MD have also had to endure. The authorities' inadequate response to this crisis is both frustrating and heartbreaking. The lack of proper lighting and speed enforcement on this particular stretch of road has resulted in an alarming rise in accidents. This is not solely about my brother anymore, but about the myriad of lives that continue to be at risk every day.

An increase in both street lighting and speed enforcement cameras on Route 97 is desperately needed. Currently, the back road highways only have two street lights, leading to severe visibility issues during the night. According to the National Safety Council, half of all traffic deaths occur at night, despite fewer drivers on the road - a statistic that highlights the critical need for better lighting on these roads.

Moreover, the lack of speed enforcement cameras allows drivers to exceed the speed limit without fear of repercussions. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has confirmed that speed cameras effectively reduce speeding and accidents. Therefore, installing speed enforcement cameras on Route 97 would undeniably contribute to road safety.

The time for action is now. In memory of my brother and all others who lost their lives on Route 97, let us work together and demand change. Sign the petition to urge our local authorities to install additional street lights and speed enforcement cameras on Route 97 in Sykesville, MD. Let's make our roads safe for everyone.
