For the past six years, parents and students of One World International School in Nanyang, Singapore, have been persistently confronted with an alarming issue: the low quality of food served to our children at school. It's disheartening to know that our children often receive meals that are not only unpalatable but also potentially harmful. There have been numerous instances where the food was either undercooked, lacked taste, or even raised concerns of contamination. Sometimes the chicken is pink, sometimes its chewy.The pasta is plain and sometimes hard to like rubber.

As a community that values the health and well-being of our children, it's essential that we address this oversight immediately. Our children deserve meals that are not only nutritious but also safe to consume. A quality meal directly contributes to a child's ability to focus, learn, and grow, yet our students are deprived of this basic necessity.

According to the World Health Organization, good nutrition is crucial during the school years, a time of rapid growth, development, and high activity levels. A nutritious diet results in better cognitive performance, ultimately facilitating academic achievement.

What do we propose? The school administration must re-evaluate their food contract and prioritize partnerships with suppliers that meet high standards of freshness, nutritional value, and budget-friendliness. Regular inspections should be mandated to ensure compliance with health regulations. Additionally, a feedback system involving students and parents can aid in continually refining the menu. Implementation of these practices can drastically improve the quality of meals and restore confidence in the school’s commitment to student welfare.
