As a lead Coordinator for our local neighbourhood watch scheme, I know first hand the value of safety and security in our community. Nightfall should not be a time for concerns and fears, especially for council taxpayers like us who are entitled to feel secure in our surroundings. It has been observed that the street lights are not consistently functional during night time as they should be, challenging our basic human rights to feel safe. In the UK, street crime rates have seen an increase of 7% in recent years (Office for National Statistics), making adequate street lighting a dire need for community security. The Council has a fundamental responsibility to address this issue promptly. We call upon the local authority, our council, to assure that the street lights are properly functioning every night, for the safety and peace of mind of every resident in our community. I have recently had a number of residents contact me stating that they do not feel safe at night, especially as the nights are now drawing in. The light timings are not always correct, so the lights are either staying on all day or not for very long at night time, this is not acceptable. We have our basic human rights to feel safe in our own neighbourhood.
