The Issue

Living with type one diabetes has been a lifelong struggle, not just with managing glucose levels, but with an ongoing battle against weight gain. Insulin, while lifesaving, is a hormone that induces hunger and contributes to weight gain. For those of us already fighting daily battles with blood sugar, the added challenge of maintaining a healthy weight can feel insurmountable.

Recently, a new drug has emerged that offers hope to those of us desperate to manage our weight effectively. However, it's disheartening and frustrating to find that, despite its availability, type one diabetics are not eligible for this potentially life-changing treatment through the NHS. This exclusion feels like a penalty for a condition we did not choose, a barrier to better health and well-being, and a neglect of our holistic health needs.

Regular GP’s can’t prescribe this drug to type one diabetics and diabetic teams don’t have funding to prescribe. We are in limbo. We can’t even buy it privately as it’s not licensed for type one diabetics despite showing positive outcomes.

Statistics indicate a higher prevalence of obesity and related complications among diabetics, which underscores the urgent need for all available tools in managing weight. The NHS has always been a beacon of support, pioneering comprehensive health management. It's time this inclusive healthcare approach extends to weight loss options for type one diabetics as well.

By providing access to weight loss injections, the NHS could significantly improve the quality of life for thousands of type one diabetics struggling with weight issues. This not only addresses a critical healthcare gap but reinforces a commitment to equitable health support for all individuals, regardless of their condition.

Join us in urging the NHS to make weight loss injections available to type one diabetics. Sign this petition to push for fairness and access to comprehensive diabetic care. Together, we can advocate for a more inclusive healthcare system that considers the full spectrum of challenges faced by type one diabetics. Your signature could help transform lives.
