Ensure K9 Dorian Retires with Deputy Berger

Ensure K9 Dorian Retires with Deputy Berger
The Issue
Having been a steadfast advocate for police K9s and their right to a peaceful retirement, I am reaching out to the community and decision-makers with a plea that resonates deeply with my values and heart. I've witnessed firsthand the bond and unwavering loyalty that forms between a K9 and their handler (human partner) a bond that shouldn't be severed without cause. K9 Dorian, a devoted 6-year-old Belgian Malinois, has served alongside Deputy Berger at the Brown County Sheriff’s Office in Green Bay, Wisconsin since March 2021. For over four years, they faced challenges together, forging a partnership based on trust and mutual respect.
Deputy Berger is attempting to do what is best for his family, who very recently welcomed a baby girl. The career move being contemplated is to improve their work-life balance and to be closer to a support system from extended family as they begin their journey as new parents. Despite all of this, the Sheriff's Office has decided not to allow Dorian to remain with his family.
Several individuals and one non-profit are offering to buy Dorian for $20,000.00 so the family can keep their beloved companion. The purchase amount would cover all of the costs for buying and training a new, young K9 for the Sheriff's Office to replace Dorian. Even with this offer extended, the Sheriff's Office decided to not let Dorian retire, even though he is currently suffering from some medical condition(s).
This situation burdens both Deputy Berger's family and Dorian, potentially disrupting the human-canine connection that has been cultivated with dedication and love. For Dorian, being forced to leave his family, live somewhere else, work with a stranger, without his long-time partner and Dad, could lead to unnecessary stress and anxiety affecting his quality of life. It's crucial that K9 officers, like Dorian, are given the opportunity to retire within the comforting environment of the only family they've ever known.
Allowing K9 Dorian to retire with Deputy Berger not only honors the years of service and sacrifices made but also acknowledges the critical role these animals play in law enforcement and their handlers' lives. Our ask is simple yet meaningful: Let Deputy Berger and his faithful companion stay together as a family. Dorian deserves at least that after protecting and serving the citizens of his community for so long!
Join us in urging the Brown County Sheriff’s Office to permit K9 Dorian to retire with Deputy Berger. By adding your signature, you can help the Berger family and ensure that Dorian receives the retirement he has rightfully earned. Sign this petition to make a difference in the lives of those who have served our community with distinction.
