‘Ensure involvement of General Practice Nurses in the planning of Primary Care Services

The Issue

For several decades the General Practice Nurse (GPN) has been at the forefront of delivering NHS Primary Care priorities. The wealth of knowledge, skills and expertise GPNs have, cannot be understated; leading in disease prevention, long-term condition management and assisting patients to manage their own health. Many GPN’s having undertaken vast amounts of additional training; including diplomas or degrees in Chronic Disease Management and arranged delivery of public health initiatives such as immunisation and vaccination programmes without General Practitioner input. Yet, GPNs are rarely consulted by NHS Primary Care Planners and Commissioners.

Since the introduction of the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS), patient-centred care has declined in many areas and is now fragmented with continuity being compromised. The goal of this petition is to advance the GPN voice locally, regionally and nationally, to ensure patient’s needs are represented accurately and quality of care is maintained.
