The fabric of American society is undergoing tremendous divisions due to the polarized atmosphere created by our limited political party system. The choice between two extremes is unsatisfactory for many, leading to a lesser of two evils mentality. It's easy to see the need for more diversity in viewpoints and policy proposals, and that can only be achieved with easier access for third-party candidates to get on ballots.

The barriers for third-party candidates are famously high in the United States as compared to other democracies. The Bipartisan Policy Center found that, "Third-party candidates face a higher number of legal barriers in the United States than in similar countries”(Bipartisan Policy Center, 2019). The inflexibility of our current party system is neither in line with the spirit of a complete democratic setup our founders envisioned, nor conducive to a healthy political climate.

Change is crucial, not just for the candidates, but for the American people as well. Open debates, an array of candidates, and more inclusive elections lead to informed electoral decisions. By lowering barriers to ballot access, we can foster an environment of real choice.
