The Issue

Growing up, school was supposed to be our safe haven, a place of learning and growth. But now, with school shootings happening all too frequently, it feels like walking into a potential danger zone. As a student attending High School in, CO, the fear has become personal. I'm scared not just for my friends and fellow students, but for myself too. The thought of seeing another headline about children dying is terrifying and we shouldn’t have to live like this. Let’s start small and help our BVSD community and branch out to keep all children safe!

Many schools across the nation have been grappling with how to better secure their environments. One effective measure that has been underutilized is the use of specially trained dogs. These dogs have the unique ability to sniff out gun powder and other explosives, providing an additional layer of security. Imagine walking into school knowing that a highly trained K-9 unit has already ensured the premises are safe.

Statistics show that in places where trained dogs are employed, incidents have been significantly deterred. For instance, schools that have incorporated bomb-sniffing dogs have reported decreased instances of weapons being brought onto campuses. These dogs act as both a preventative measure and a deterrent, letting potential threats know they will not go unnoticed.

However, implementation requires support from local school boards, law enforcement, and our community. We need to advocate for these changes at Centaurus High School, Monarch High School, Legacy High School and beyond, making the seriousness of this issue known to educators and policymakers. The safety of students should be the highest priority.

We urge the Boulder Valley School District and local authorities in Lafayette, CO, to consider the deployment of K-9 units trained in detecting gun powder as part of a comprehensive security plan for our schools.

Stand with me in demanding a safer environment for students in Colorado. Help us protect our future and ensure that schools remain places of learning, not fear. Please, sign this petition and share it with fellow community members. Let's make our voices heard for the safety of our children and ourselves.
