Enhance school safety measures in Oakey
The issue
For a long time, Oakey State High School students and families have navigated a perilous journey to and from school. Situated near the bustling Toowoomba Road, Campbell Street, Aubigny Road, and Oakey Pittsworth Road intersections, safety concerns have been a pressing issue. A recent accident on March 17th highlighted just how urgently improvements are needed to protect our students.
We are urging the Toowoomba Regional Council and Transport and Main Roads (TMR) in Queensland to take immediate action to improve safety around Oakey State High School. These measures include installing raised speed bump zebra crossings and enhancing intersections at Toowoomba Road, Campbell Street, and Aubigny Road.
One of the most straightforward yet effective interventions would be the installation of more flashing school zone signs on Aubigny Road and Oakey Pittsworth Road towards the key intersections. Visible and consistent signage can significantly influence driver behaviour, improving focus and reducing speed in high-risk areas. Even more, we must consider closing Aubigny Road where it meets Toowoomba Road and Campbell Street, to further guard the students' route.
Statistically, areas with improved pedestrian crossings and better signage experience fewer accidents. According to the Queensland Government's Road Safety Strategy, effective school zone measures can reduce the risk of accidents by up to 25% within a two-year implementation period.
Every moment we delay these essential improvements, we place our students at greater risk. This isn't just about implementing infrastructure; it's about safeguarding lives.
We implore the decision makers to prioritize these changes and ensure that Oakey State High School becomes a safer place for our children. Your signature can make this a reality. Sign the petition to demand immediate safety upgrades now!
