I have witnessed a growing number of reports from local residents on Facebook community groups. These reports describe negative and sometimes frightening encounters with groups of individuals riding electric bikes while wearing face coverings. Many people have expressed concerns about feeling intimidated or unsafe in public spaces.

As electric bikes become more popular, the number of incidents involving reckless riding and intimidation from groups of unsupervised children and teenagers has increased. These groups often ride in large packs, utilizing sidewalks, and other public spaces in ways that pose threats to pedestrians, particularly the elderly and young children. The anonymity provided by face coverings adds to the sense of vulnerability experienced by many residents.

According to a study published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the prevalence of electric bikes on public roads is rising. However, without proper regulation and control, this rise could lead to a proportional increase in safety-related incidents.

Therefore, we are calling upon local authorities to enact and enforce stricter regulations on electric bike usage, especially concerning minors. This includes:

1. Implementing mandatory safety courses for individuals under 18 who wish to operate electric bikes.
2.Increased police patrols and community safety initiatives in areas where anti-social behaviour involving electric bikes has been reported.
3.Greater support for residents to report incidents and concerns, ensuring that reports are investigated appropriately.

Our goal is not to restrict responsible electric bike users, but to improve public safety, protect pedestrians and road users, and reduce anti-social behaviour that negatively affects our communities.. Let’s work together to create a safer community for all.
