Animal welfare campaigners are trying to free a polar bear that's being kept in a shopping centre in China. 

China is a beautiful country, without a doubt. However, beneath this beauty lies a concealed history of inadequate animal welfare and rights. The presence of live fish, dogs, and other animals displayed in malls as part of arcade games is evidence of this stark reality. These creatures are caged in confined spaces, waiting to become someone's prize in exchange for tokens. Such acts reduce living beings to the level of objects, and this is far from an act of kindness or necessity for children to 'bring a pet home'. 

Animal rights and welfare have gained interest within the country, but unfortunately, the legislative framework remains limited when measured against international standards and "bourgeois sentimentality". As a result, animals in China continue to suffer. The current legislature lacks comprehensive protections, leading to alarming acts of cruelty, such as the public display and commodification of living animals. 

Globally, a myriad of countries has recognized and acted on the need for stringent animal welfare laws from the push of the people's voices to step up through petitions against animal cruelty and petition-which shows that with enough voices, we can make a difference. By signing this petition, we are one step closer to protecting the animals who are victim to cruelty in China and pushing for the National People's  Congress to step up.

Concrete steps must  be taken to amend existing laws or introduce new legislation that enforces stricter regulations on the ethical treatment of animals. This may involve prohibiting the display and sale of live animals as prizes, ensuring proper conditions for the care and transport of animals, and establishing severe penalties for those who violate these laws.

Growing movements for animal rights within China present a unique opportunity for change. Homegrown activists and international communities are advocating for the same cause. By bridging these efforts, more powerful and impactful change can occur. Voices united against cruelty can foster a more humane world.
