The handing over of 42.259 signatures or our petition https://www.change.org/p/enforce-the-law-248-12-no-more-animal-abuse-and-poisonings-in-the-dominican-republic – 36.377 signatures - and the petition https://www.change.org/p/cumpla-la-ley-248-12-de-protecci%C3%B3n-contra-el-maltrato-y-tenencia-responsable-de-animales?recruiter=8420764&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=autopublish&utm_term=des-lg-no_src-no_msg of Alexandra Morillo Velastegui - 5882 signatures – to the president of the Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina, is being prepared!
Goal: The resumption of negotiations between Dominican animal welfare organizations and the Dominican government that have led in the past to the passing of the Dominican animal welfare law Ley 248-12 in order to improve the enforcement of this law.
Why did we coordinate the 2 petitions?
Because, once enforced, Ley 248-12 is also the solution for our cause, the ending of mass poisonings and cruelty against animals at beaches and holiday resorts. Poisonings are strictly prohibited by the law and punished with high fines or jail. And also foreign investors who run most Caribbean hotels have to abide by the laws of the country where they do business!
We will inform you about the government’s reaction and further developments.
We thank once again all supporters of our petitions!
Our petition shall stay open for some time also after the official presentation to support the enforcement of the Ley 248-12 as well as our beach dog project in Boca Chica, one of the most popular vacation spots in the Dominican Republic not too far from the capital where we spayed and neutered over 100 beach dogs in February. All were marked with yellow ear tags and shall be fed and medically cared for in the future at official feeding stations permitted by the town council of Boca Chica. The project will be accompanied by intensive information for tourists not to feed animals anywhere else and community outreach with spay and neuter operatives to prevent uncontrolled breeding and resultant abandonings and to promote responsible pet keeping. This project shall become a role model of humane stray animal population management also for other vacation spots. (We are expecting news from Boca Chica shortly after Pentecost.)
The history of our petition:
It started on the 02/19/2013 and addressed most sizeable hotels of the Dominican Republic asking them to end seasonal mass poisonings of strays and offering to them the humane method of spay and neuter instead combined with further monitoring as planned now in Boca Chica. Also the TUI group, the world’s largest travel and tourism company, supported the petition by sending an email to over 90 hotels in the Dominican Republic in 2014. Animal welfare organizations of other Caribbean islands asked to add their officials as addressees; ministries and governments of Barbados, Jamaica and Nevis received our petition. In March 2017 the petition closed temporarily with 32.900 signatures and re-opened in June 2017 to support and cooperate with the petition of Alexandra Morillo Velastegui.
Happy Pentecost to all of you!
