While our vets are busy spaying and neutering in the villages of the province Barahona preparations are underway for the operative in Boca Chica on February 8th, 9th, 10thand 11th. Tourists alerted us in December about severe abuse by the security of their hotel with electro shocks, sticks and stones against hungry begging beach dogs. Now we try to implement there a program to manage stray animal populations in tourist spots compatible with the tourist business. The animals will get spayed and neutered, vaccinated against rabies and receive ear tags to clearly identify them as participants in the project, just like the dog on the photo that was taken in Agadir, Morocco and sent to us to be published as example. Official feeding stations shall be created that will be taken care of daily by 2 helpers. A vet offered to volunteer once a month to provide medical care and encounter the prejudice that all strays are sick and carry dangerous contagious diseases. A trader will let us have damaged bags of food at a very cheap rate. A printer will supply the necessary info flyers just for the cost of the paper because It is essential for the success of the project that we not only obtain the acceptance of hotels and restaurants but also convince animal-friendly tourists to respect the designated feeding places and feed nowhere else thus helping us to end the begging and searching for food by the dogs there where they are unwanted and may disturb guests who are not so keen on close contact with animals. If we succeed in Boca Chica this may become a role model for places with similar problems and prevent countless poisonings.
