Many of us have personal connections to women - they are our mothers, our sisters, our friends. To know that they live in a world where their safety is continuously threatened by sexual assault is a distressing reality we must address. Regularly, our loved ones express fear and anxiety about walking alone at night, due to the constant threat of sexual predators.

The current situation is even more unsettling when we see that offenders often receive light sentences for their horrific crimes. Sexual assault is a violation of a person's dignity, destroying the psychological, social and physical wellbeing of the victim. We firmly believe that the punishment for such appalling violations must be proportionate to the severity of the crime.

Although every 73 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted (RAINN), the sentences doled out to these monsters are often minimal. This leniency not only adds further insult to the victim's injury but also encourages future potential offenders. We cannot allow this culture of dismissal and trivialization to continue.

We must stand up against this grave injustice and seek reform in our judicial system. We demand stricter and more appropriate punishments for sexual assault offenders, which should act as effective deterrents. Let us safeguard our loved ones from such nightmarish experiences.
