Enforce stricter penalties for negligent landlords
The Issue
My brother died at just 27 years old, in a home riddled with mould after he died there was investigations but their specialist in mould arrived seven months too late. By then, the landlord had already painted over and attempted to erase the mould, evading any accountability for my brother or the house. This isn’t an isolated incident. Just a couple of years prior, a young boy died under similar circumstances, prompting immediate investigation people should be treated equally in. These situations However, this pattern of negligence continues, with families suffering in mould-ridden homes while landlords in private sector homes profit from rent.
Mould is not just a cosmetic issue; it is a serious health hazard that can lead to respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and in severe cases, even death. According to the World Health Organization, indoor exposure to dampness and mould increases the risk of respiratory diseases in children and adults. In the UK alone, it is estimated that 10% of housing stock has a serious damp problem, affecting approximately two million homes.
Local councils and environmental health bodies must step up their efforts to safeguard tenants’ health.private Landlords should be held to account with immediate and stringent fines if they fail to maintain a basic standard of living, which includes providing mould-free homes. We need stronger regulations requiring landlords to fix such health hazards immediately, and if not, they should face significant penalties and even revocation of their rental licenses also compensation for people effected
We must call for more consistent inspections and faster responses from local authorities when tenants report issues like mould. Each reported case should trigger an automatic investigation to ensure landlords cannot cover up problems.
My goal is to prevent any more unnecessary loss of life due to negligent private landlords and systemic failures. I want to name this initiative after my brother to honor his memory by ensuring safer living conditions for all.and get compensation for people effected by mould
Your signature can bring change. It will help pressurize local councils to enforce these regulations more effectively and ensure landlords adhere to them.
