As residents and business owners in the bustling city of Charlotte, it's important that the city not be so loud that none of us can live comfortably. While there are numerous noisy activities that we all have to live with, e.g. construction, not all of them are necessary. One of these unnecessary sounds come from the exhaust pipes of motorists that deliberately modify or remove their mufflers in order to make a hugely disruptive roar for their own entertainment.

   In 2005, the state of NC passed Statute 20-128 that makes this practice illegal. We are coming together to ask the CMPD and the City of Charlotte to take stronger action enforcing this law. 

  We also understand that noise violations are not a top priority for law enforcement, as there are generally more dangerous crimes that require urgent attention. However, most of these motorists are the same people who careen around the roads, drag race, and generally endanger motorists and pedestrians alike while showing off their cars.

  This practice of modifying vehicular exhaust has exploded since the pandemic. It seems likely that the CMPD is not accustomed to enforcing these muffler laws as part of their routine traffic enforcement protocol. However, it stands to reason that even a modest level of attention to this problem will achieve both goals: bring peace AND quiet to the streets of Charlotte.
