Enforce Michigan’s Safe Storage Law and Deliver Justice for Faith
The Issue
My daughter’s name is Faith, and 16 months ago her life was brutally taken in Monroe County in an act of teen dating violence & gun violence. Despite Michigans Safe Storage Law that holds adult firearm owners responsible if a minor obtains them, there has been no accountability for Faith’s murder.
This is about what it means when a law exists to protect children and families, but people do not see it enforced, even when a life is lost. That sets a precedent that these tragedies can be brushed aside, and I cannot accept that. Faith mattered, and justice for her matters.
I am calling on the Monroe County Prosecutor and if applicable, Michigan State Police and Attorney General to fully review Faith’s case and enforce Michigan’s safe storage law wherever the facts support it. If a failure to secure a firearm contributed to my daughter’s death, then that failure must be treated according to the law. There have been more than a handful of adult/ parents / grandparent held on felony of safe storage JUST THIS YEAR- because a minor obtained their weapon and caused harm to themselves or another minor. Why doesn’t the same apply in Monroe County, but is applicable in other bordering counties?
I will continue to protest until we do have justice for Faith, because silence will not protect anyone. She is missing her senior year of high school, picking out a college to study veterinary medicine, and building her future. She is deeply missed by so, so many. If you believe Faith’s life & Michigan’s safe storage law should mean something in Monroe County, please sign this petition!
Sincerely,
Lesa , Faithy’s Mom
