Enforce Laws to Protect Patient Privacy and Prevent Unsanctioned Disclosures by Doctors
The Issue
In recent years, I've been dealing with a personal medical challenge: limited peripheral vision, stemming from my hearing loss. Despite these obstacles, I strive daily to lead a fulfilling, autonomous life. My commendable driving record, free of safety and traffic violations, is testament to my commitment to responsible habits.
That being said, an incident happened that deeply violated my trust in medical professionals and, by extension, my rights as a patient. My primary care physician, Dr. Andrew J. McGown with the Waukesha ProHealth Care Medical Group, without my prior knowledge or consent, submitted a medical report to the DMV recommending the revocation of my driver's license.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) - a federal law designed to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient's consent or knowledge - seems to have been overlooked in this disturbing event (Source: CDC).
Every person has a right to their privacy, especially when matters of such personal import are involved. The overreach highlighted in this narrative suffices as a call to action: We must ensure legislation is firmly in place to prevent doctors from violating patient trust and privacy, not just in letter, but in spirit. Moreover, stricter penalties for violating such laws should be enforced to deter such infractions in future.
By signing this petition, you stand with me, and countless others, to put an end to unauthorised medical disclosures and breaches of patient trust. Let's keep personal health information personal, and protect patients from such unnecessary distress. Sign today, let's drive change.
